Five (5) Months Post-op for Kamea

This week marks Five (5) Months Post-op for Kamea!

If you did not know, Kamea had luxating patella surgery in September (2024), you can read the specifics here.

I know veterinarians say it is a three (3) month recovery period and that is true for the surgical healing process but for Kamea- it took ~five (5) months for her to trust herself again.

She is now running, jumping, and playing. We are back to our walks where she visits her friends; and, we are back to golfing where she can chase geese (and Austin’s golf cart).

I share this a note of caution, to trust your surgeon and the process but also be aware healing takes time (a no brainer when logic prevails).

In full transparency, there were a few weeks around the three (3) month mark I questioned my decision because I felt like Kamea was no longer improving. I took her back to see Dr. Pedraza, he assured me everything was fine, her leg was healed and she would only improve moving forward.

While she is still not 100% weight baring, both veterinarians said small dogs take longer, she is using her leg a lot more as I previously described.

I wish I knew the emotional toll it would take but I would do it all again if need be- seeing how happy Kamea is brings tears to my eyes.

Additional bonus- her hair is almost grown back!

We are not completely done with this process for Kamea, she will need to have the pins removed but we are waiting to do so when she has her teeth cleaned to limit anesthesia. I will keep you posted when that happens, in the meantime- I hope sharing our journey has helped provide a little more information, feel free to reach out if you have specific questions.🩷J&K
